College Planning for Freshmen and Sophomores

Freshman  Checklist
 
Fall
 
               Become familiar with  
               high school graduation
               requirements. Prepare
               a four-year high school
               plan.
 
Winter
 
Keep a record of your volunteer hours, activities and community service references. Begin planning for college expenses at www.scholarshare.com andwww.finaid.org
 
Spring
 
Check with your counselor to see if you need to go to summer school.
 
Subject Test in Biology or World History if you plan to apply to University of California.
 
If you plan to do concurrent enrollment in either summer or in the fall, obtain permission slips from the community college.  They are due mid-June. 
 
Set up an e-mail account for college communication only.  Avoid “free” services such as hotmail, and do not use clever email addresses which may make a poor impression on college admission officers.

Fall
 
Obtain a list of the college representatives who will visit campus.  Sign up to take the PSAT (pre-SAT) given in October.
 
Winter
 
Apply to UC Berkeley’s summer Academic Talent Development Program (ATDP), if desired. 
Visit the Career Center to take career interest inventories.
 
Spring
 
The CAHSEE test is administered to sophomores in March.
